4-Panel Letter Sequence

Objective

First Set of Ideations

The four-panel letter sequence is a project intended to focus on the nuances of one specific letterform of a particular typeface. This project aims to progress from complete abstraction in the first (far-left) panel to full reveal in the final panel (far-right).

Posture Regular

Once I chose a few letters and typefaces to experiment with, I sketched out experimental compositions using those forms for the first two panels. Over time, I zeroed in on the Baskerville lowercase "r" as the
letter I wanted to use.

For the fourth set of iterations, I included all four panels and added the necessary titles "Typography and the Letterform" and "Baskerville." I worked on refining and simplifying in the final stages and making sure everything was in alignment.

Final Sequence and Possible Applications

For the second set of iterations for panels 1 and 2, I focused on simplifying the composition. I used the figure-ground relationship and larger letterforms from the Fibonacci sequence to further abstract the panels.

For the third set of iterations, I started brainstorming how the second and third panels would connect and how the composition would get less abstract as it moved to the right. Critiquing this stage helped me pay more attention to the small details, such as aligning angles and eliminating tiny slivers of black and white to give a more well-rounded composition.
